Learn how you can be part of the CALS student experience

At CALS, you’ll find programs that let you explore your interests, gain hands-on experience, and prepare for a successful career. Our students are curious about our living world and tackle big questions in areas like health & nutrition, food & agriculture, biological sciences, sustainability & environment, and business, communication and society.

Your education here goes beyond the classroom. From research in labs and fields to internships with leading employers, you’ll have countless opportunities to learn by doing. Our goal is to help you be academically and personally successful here at UW–Madison.

    The CALS Experience

    First-year experiences

Every CALS student take a first-year seminar — a class that’s designed to support your transition to college and get you connected with resources. First-year students can also participate in CALS QuickStart, join a first-year interest group (FIG), or join a residential learning community.

    CALS programs

If you’re curious about improving our living world, you’ll find a home here in CALS. We’re finding solutions to global problems by advancing human, animal, and plant health, creating healthy food systems, and making agriculture more sustainable. Explore our majors and certificates and find your passion in the area that speaks to you.

    Hands-on learning

All CALS students take a senior-level capstone course that integrates interdisciplinary knowledge to address a problem of societal relevance and also helps prepare students for their future careers. Most students also complete independent research experiences or participate in internship programs.

    Student organizations

With more than 30 CALS-sponsored student organizations, students can find friends, explore their interests, and get involved in professional and leadership opportunities.

    Advising and student services

Our goal in CALS is to help students be academically and personally successful on campus and beyond. CALS advisors help students navigate their UW–Madison experience by offering advising and events related to academics, careers, study abroad, honors, and more.
