
Genetics in a Modern World Certificate
The genetics in a modern world certificate is open to all UW–Madison students. This certificate explores the relationship between modern genetics, research, and society.
In this 12-credit certificate program you will:
- Gain an understanding of basic genetics knowledge and scientific methodologies and apply them to current topics in genetics and genomics
- Analyze how genetics research has influenced society and everyday life and how society shapes the direction of genetics research
- Explore the interactions between genetics and genomics research and the life sciences, humanities, and social sciences to address questions related to ethics, history, social science, and public policy
- Understand how genetics knowledge provides a strong foundation for careers in healthcare, research, biotechnology, environmental science, and public policy
- Investigate topics such as:
- Genetic engineering and the creation of genetically modified organisms (GMOs)
- The role of the human microbiome in health
- Advancements in personalized medicine, cloning and gene-editing technologies such as CRISPR
- The genetic underpinnings of aging, cancer, sleep, diet, and disease
