
Fermented Foods and Beverages Certificate
The fermented foods and beverages certificate is open to all UW–Madison students. This certificate explores the science, development, production, and marketing of fermented foods and beverages.
In this 12-credit certificate program you will:
- Understand the theoretical and practical aspects of food and beverage fermentation
- Learn about fermentative organisms and the role of metabolic engineering in precision fermentation for food and non-food applications
- Take a hands-on approach to learning with experiential courses and learn from fermented products such as:
- Beer, wine, and spirits
- Sourdough, kimchi, and sauerkraut
- Cheese and yogurt
- Investigate the role of fermentation in sustainable feedstocks, renewable materials, and biofuels and how they can help solve global environmental challenges
- Explore the concepts of branding, business management, and labeling that are relevant to marketing fermented foods and beverages
- Benefit from the rich history of Wisconsin in the fermented food and beverage industry while exploring the latest developments in the field
