Microbiology is the study of the smallest living things

The smallest living things—including bacteria, viruses, and yeast—may not be visible to the human eye, but they have big effects on health, food, medicine, energy, and the environment.

As a Microbiology major you will:

  • Become well-versed in core concepts such as cellular biology, genetics, ecology, evolution, and physiology of microbes
  • Gain practical laboratory experience and learn modern laboratory techniques including DNA cloning, protein purification, and DNA sequencing
  • Discover the connections between microbiology and modern issues such as human health, global climate change, infectious disease, environmental remediation, and bioenergy
