
Jackson Banks, who is from Omro, WI, is graduating this spring with a bachelor’s environmental sciences and a certificate in fermented foods and beverages. In the below Q&A, he talks about his involvement in clubs, Alpha Gamma Rho, and his work with CALS as a SOAR Peer Advisor, teaching fellow, and student ambassador. Jackson is exploring work in student services with plans to pursue graduate school in the future.
What’s your hometown? / Where did you grow up?
Omro, WI.
Why did you choose your major? What was the most interesting or the coolest thing you learned in your courses?
I’m an environmental sciences major and I chose it because I thought I’d enjoy a work environment that isn’t in an office. One of the most fun courses I’ve taken is Food Sci 551, where we got to brew our very own beverages.
What student organizations, groups, and other activities were you involved in?
I’ve participated in the Madison Esports Club and Environmental Sciences Club. I’m also a part of Alpha Gamma Rho, which is the agricultural fraternity on campus. I’ve worked as a CALS SOAR Peer Advisor, an Undergraduate Teaching Fellow for InterAg 155, a CALS Student Ambassador, and I’m currently working as a Dairy Forage Lab Intern.
What are your post-graduation plans?
I’m currently looking to get involved in student services work, and I’d eventually like to continue my schooling in either counseling psychology or educational leadership and policy analysis.
What were the most valuable and/or meaningful experiences you had in CALS?
Engaging and connecting with my peers and faculty and creating meaningful connections
When you think about your time here as a student, what are you proud of?
I received the CALS Student Employee award this year which is something I’m personally quite proud of, as well as all of the wonderful people I’ve been able to claim as my friends!
Do you have any advice you’d like to share with CALS students?
Be unapologetically yourself, it’ll bring the coolest people into your life.
What do you like most about being a CALS student?
The sense of camaraderie and community between all of us students.
If you had to eat one Babcock ice cream flavor for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
Banana Cream Pie, I love the sugary pie chunks!
What’s your favorite thing about the city of Madison?
Definitely the sunsets on the lake!
