Spring 2025 Grad: Mohamed AlMulla

Mohamed AlMulla discovers connections between genetics and agronomy

Mohamed AlMulla, who grew up in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, is graduating this spring with a bachelor’s in genetics and genomics and agronomy. In this Q&A, he talks about why he chose his majors and his involvement in multiple student organizations. He plans to pursue a master’s of science in bacteriology at UW–Madison this fall. You can watch his video interview at the bottom of the page or on YouTube.

Why did you choose your major? What was the most interesting or the coolest thing you learned?

I’ve always been curious about the genetic and molecular side of diseases, which is what drew me to the genetics and genomics major. Later on, I got really interested in food security and agricultural technology, so I added agronomy. It’s been cool to see how the two fields overlap and connect in ways I didn’t expect.

What student organizations, groups, and other activities were you involved in?

During my time at UW–Madison I’ve been a member of the UW–Madison Men’s Bowling Team and the Badger Olympic Weightlifting Club (BOWC). In these, I was able to take on a Co-Captain role on the Bowling Team and Social Media Manager with BOWC.

What are your future academic and/or career plans, short-term and long-term?

I’m hoping to continue my studies doing the Masters of Science in Bacteriology at UW–Madison this upcoming fall.

What were the most valuable and/or meaningful experiences you had in CALS?

Being able to learn from professors about topics they’re genuinely passionate about. Also, building connections with my professors and classmates, it made a big school feel a lot smaller.

When you think about your time here as a student, what are you proud of?

I’m proud that I found a home away from home and grew into someone who’s excited about being comfortable in the unknown.

Do you have any advice you’d like to share with CALS students?

Find friends who you can go through the ups and downs with, college is better when you’re surrounded by people who want to see you do better and thrive.

What do you like most about being a CALS student?

I like that CALS is a smaller school compared to other colleges at UW. It’s easier to build real connections with classmates and professors, which makes the experience feel more personal and meaningful.

If you had to eat one Babcock ice cream flavor for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

Union Utopia!

What’s your favorite thing about the city of Madison?

I like that we’re in the middle of 2 lakes and that the university is so integrated into the city. It’s the perfect mix of a college town, metropolitan city, and nature.
