SOAR Peer Advisor Position

The College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) is seeking five or six self-motivated, energetic, and mature undergraduates to serve as SOAR Peer Advisors. The Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR) program in CALS welcomes over 600 students during the entire summer, and the SOAR Peer Advisor position plays a very important role in accomplishing our goals. Peer Advisors work collaboratively with CALS Professional advisors and staff to welcome, orient, and advise incoming freshman and transfer students. This role directly supports students in our academic advising spaces.

SOAR Peer Advisor Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate program activities, promoting student interaction, engagement, and learning
  • Work with incoming students in small groups, and one-on-one to answer questions
  • Teach students how to use and navigate enrollment tools
  • Help understand course selection, enrollment, and degree requirements
  • Share information on CALS student organizations, resources, and other student services
  • Provide tips and resources on adjusting to college life at UW-Madison
  • Complete administrative tasks relative to program needs


  • Current CALS student, and continuing to pursue your degree through Fall 2019
  • Pride being in CALS, and at the University of Wisconsin-Madison
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work with a variety of students, with different academic interests and skills
  • Strong commitment to working effectively with students from diverse cultural, economic, ethnic, regional, and religious backgrounds
  • Mature and professional work ethic with students, other peer advisors, and professional staff
  • Patience working with others one-on-one, or in small groups
  • Available for all training dates and SOAR sessions

Hours and Compensation:

  • Employment dates are approximately May 29 – August 30, 2019
  • Pre-SOAR Training will run approximately May 29 – June 6, 2019 (required attendance)
  • SOAR Program dates are June 7 – August 30, 2019 (8:15 AM – 5:00 PM Monday – Friday)
  • Peer Advisor hours range between 25-30 per week during SOAR session
  • Salary is $10.50 per hour
